Shimba Hills & Sheldrick Falls
Escape the coastal heat by spending a day in Shimba Hills National Reserve, just an hour's drive from Diani. This beautiful reserve is home to the rare sable antelope, as well as elephants, buffalo, impala, warthogs and a wide variety of birds and butterflies.
Start with a short game drive upon arrival, then hike to Sheldrick Falls, an impressive 25-metre waterfall with a natural pool, perfect for a refreshing dip. Afterwards, enjoy a scenic walk through the park before heading back to the lodge for a late lunch.
In the afternoon, relax at the lodge and admire the view of the Mwaluganje Sanctuary and the elephants in the distance. On a clear day, you can see the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. End the day with a drive back to your beachfront hotel.
Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya's largest and oldest national parks, renowned for its vast plains, iconic red elephants and fascinating history.
It consists mainly of semi-arid plains, savannahs and dry grasslands. Unlike Tsavo West, it is relatively flat, making it easier to observe animals as the vegetation is less dense.
Tsavo East is a stronghold of biodiversity and an excellent place to observe animals. It is possible to see the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). Hippos and crocodiles in the Galana River, Grant's zebras, Masai giraffes, antelopes and the rare gerenuk.
More than 500 species of birds have been recorded, including the Somali ostrich. A series of rapids on the Galana River.
Tsavo West National Park
Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya's most popular safari destinations, renowned for its spectacular landscapes, which are more hilly and varied than those of its counterpart, Tsavo East.
The landscapes are very diverse, characterised by hills, rocky ridges, volcanic cones, solidified lava flows, wooded savannahs and green oases.
Mzima Springs: a series of crystal-clear water sources, forming a green oasis where hippos and crocodiles can easily be spotted.
Shetani Lava Fields: This site offers an impressive lunar landscape, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: a fenced area dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of the black rhino, an endangered species.
Kilimanjaro Viewing: The park offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, on clear days.
Taita Hills: Mountain range within an adjoining private reserve. The park is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, black rhino). Elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, Masai giraffes, Grevy's zebras, small kudus, beisa oryx, dik-diks, and hippos and crocodiles at Mzima Springs.
Birds: More than 500 species of birds have been recorded, as the park is on one of the busiest bird migration routes in the world.
